而WilliamStrunk,Jk和E.B.White合著的著名小册子《The Elements of Style》中对这个概念有着经典的阐述。

A:to acceleratethe pace of economic reform

B:to accelerateeconomic reform

[“to accelerate”=”toincrease the pace of”]

A:there havebeen good harvests in agriculture

B:there havebeen good harvests

[“harvests”implies agriculture: there are no harvests in industry(harvest就暗示了丰收不是工业上的。)]

韦氏词典中harvest的解释:theseason when crops are gathered from the fields or the activity of gatheringcrops.

A:livingstandards for the people in both urban and rural areas continued torise.

B:livingstandards in both urban and rural areas continued to rise.

A:thesehardships are temporary in nature

B:thesehardships are temporary

A:thedevelopment of our economy in the future will, to a large extent, dependon…

B:the developmentof our economy will depend to a large extent…

A:we shouldadopt a series of measures to ensure that…

B:we shouldadopt measures to ensure that…

A:following the realizationof mechanization and electrification of agriculture

B:following themechanization and electrification of agriculture

A:it isessential to strengthen the building of national defense

B:it isessential to strengthen national defense

A:theseconstitute important conditions in striving for the fulfillment of thegeneral task in the transitional period

B:these areimportant conditions for fulfillment the general task in the transition period

A:at that timethe situation in northeast China was still one where the enemy wasstronger than the people’s forces

B:at that timethe enemy was still stronger than the people’s forces in northeast China

A:the key tothe solution lies in the curtailment of expenditure

B:the solutionis to curtail(or: cut back on) expenditure

A:inner-Partydemocracy is a subject that has been discussed in detail

B:inner-Partydemocracy has been discussed in detail

即用一个表类别的名词来引出接下来的一个该类别下的具体名词(或动名词),如这句:a serious mistake in the work of planning.

所以第一个名词应该删去,此句改为:a serious mistake in planning.

A:promoting thecause of peaceful reunification

B:promotingpeaceful reunification

A:reforms in thesphere of the economy

B:reforms in theeconomy (or: economy reforms)

A: to ensure arelationship of close cooperation between…

B:to ensureclose cooperation between…

A: we mustoppose the practice of extravagance

B:we must opposeextravagance

A:theseprinciples apply to all cases of relations between China and other countries

B:theseprinciples apply to relations between China and all other countries

A:this, coupledwith the factor of price instability, caused…

B:this, coupledwith price instability, caused…
